Best of Stash 2024: Game Films!

Motion projects generated by the gaming universe in 2024 continued to provide fertile ground for both creative and technical innovation with these seven films providing ambitious and dynamic examples.

We were honored to publish all of these projects in The Stash Permanent Collection during 2024. They are listed here in reverse chronological order by their issue of publication.

“CRONOS: THE NEW DAWN” (above)
STASH 168

Jan Cafourek, EP at Goodbye Kansas Studios in Stockholm, Sweden: “We were tasked with creating a unique storytelling teaser trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn, Bloober Team’s first original IP in the survival horror game genre. We worked closely with the client who provided briefs that formed a clear vision of what the movie needed to be.

“We wanted to create a cinematic experience, a twisted time travel story, which was both interesting for fans and captivating for newcomers as well. Creating the atmosphere presented unique challenges, especially in capturing a world where Eastern European Brutalism merges with retro-futuristic technology.”

GENSHIN IMPACT “MOONLIT BAMBOO FOREST”
STASH 168

Chamseddine Kaddouri, creative producer at Passion Paris: “Moonlit Bamboo Forest is an immersive adventure, playing with the boundaries of imagination and reality produced with support from Je Suis Bien Content for HoYoFair, a collection of original creations inspired by the universe of Genshin Impact and other franchises from HoYoverse.

“The film was conceived as a cultural bridge, blending traditional Chinese art with director David Pagaille’s unique vision, alongside influences from Japanese anime and Western illustration. Drawing from inspirations like Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, we aimed to offer a fresh visual take, merging classical techniques with modern animation.”

LEAGUE OF LEGENDS WORLDS 2024 ANTHEM: LINKIN PARK “HEAVY IS THE CROWN”
STASH 168

Following up on last year’s deranged “Feeding Frenzy” trailer (Stash 162), Eddy directing duo Kevin Teau Rose and Gautier Alfirevic (aka Kegs) unleash a music video/anthem film to open the League of Legends Worlds 2024 event.

From the team at Eddy: “We partnered with Riot Games for the creation and production of the trailer and social media assets for the 2024 League of Legends Worlds – which is the biggest yearly event for the esports community. As this year’s competition takes place entirely in Europe, the Kegs were inspired by European medieval art.”

DESTINY 2 “THE FINAL SHAPE – TRAVELER VISION”
STASH 167

In one of the last projects out the door of Glasgow’s Axis Studios before the company’s closure in July 2024, director Sava Zivkovic conjures an ambitious and atmospheric CG cinematic for Bungie’s Destiny 2 franchise.

Sava Živković, director in Belgrade, Serbia: “We worked very closely with Bungie’s cinematic team who provided us with scripts that were so creative, descriptive, and unique. From there it was an exercise of going through various previz and storyboard processes to further nail down the creative. This was probably the most fun and creatively charged part of the process for me personally.”

RIOT GAMES “VALORANT CONSOLE LAUNCH”
STASH 167

Mill+ director David Lawson: “The biggest creative challenge of this trailer was finding a way to squeeze all the content into three minutes without it feeling like it’s going hundred miles an hour all the time. I wanted to slow things down enough to give fans a moment to enjoy parts of the VALORANT world they haven’t seen.

“Knowing I wanted the camera choreography to feel blended perfectly with the edit and the action, we invested heavily in layout and previs. For me, the film really is born in layout and so myself and my team put a lot of our energy there.”

“BATTLE ACES TRAILER”
STASH 166

Louve Karnas, director at The Line in London: “The client was looking for a cinematic piece to accompany the grand reveal of their game Battle Aces – a trailer that introduced this world in epic and explosive fashion, while retaining the fundamentals and ideas behind the game.

“Narratively the challenge was to figure out how much we could show without the piece feeling too fast or bloated. The film showcases a LOT of things, from a launching sequence to the summoning of a titanesque monster and we had to make sure we could show all of those while keeping a sense of momentum and clarity.”

“ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE “GOLD ROAD”
STASH 166

From the team at The Mill in Los Angeles: “We were tasked with creating a full-CG cinematic from script through to the final film, giving the viewer a glimpse into the world of Elder Scrolls Online and the adventures in the new chapter, all while without revealing too much of the game.

“We created all the worlds and the characters Ithilia and Torvisar from scratch while building on the High Elf, the Nord, and the Breton to bring them up to 2024 game cinematic quality. This involved focusing on the smallest details including their clothing and hair which was perfected strand by strand.”
