Brussels-based director/animator Joost Jansen, who says “morphing animations are my blood flow”, casts his alter ego Dreamcat in the lead role of this out-of-control music video for Flemish hip-hop artist Kramer (aka Jeroen Perceval).

Joost Jansen: “Besides being a rapper, Jeroen Perceval is also a director and actor who had previously collaborated as a screenwriter on my sci-fi short film Drifter, and in return I promised he would be provided with a music video.

“The resulting film evolved out of my organic animation Looptroop 2.5, a morphing loop of characters inspired by icons such as Akira, Moebius, Porky Pig, and Wonder Woman. I find relaxation in creating free-flow animations like this where frame-to-frame morphing occurs and the end point is not predetermined.
 

“The lyrics of the song revolve around ‘making sense of’ and ‘the meaning of’, which evokes questions in which our ego is the major driving force.”

 
“The animation of Looptroop 2.5 matched the chorus of the track perfectly and so it was a matter of filling the rest of the space with situations in which Dreamcat plays or struggles with his ego in a surreal way. “The morphing animations are traditionally hand-drawn on a Cintiq tablet in Toon Boom. I start by drawing out a sketchy movement and build the cleanup over that, where the frames and characters take on their true form.

“Once the entire song was animated, the images were forwarded to the post-production studio Make Mami Proud in Düsseldorf, who I often work with. MMP provided the final layer of organic glitches, camera shakes, and other effects.”
