The dense, detailed, and somewhat delirious style of director/animator/designer Alice Saey (first seen in her promo for Shaking Godspeed’s “She’s Young”) provides a mesmerizing backdrop in this latest work for Jo Goes Hunting.
Alice Saey: “Jo Goes Hunting is the brainchild of Jimmi Jo Hueting. Besides his activities as a jazz drummer, he is blooming as an eccentric producer and songwriter.
“[This video] is a colorful, non-linear narrative, structured like a never-ending map, with an intricate network of individual looping scenes that are shown simultaneously and bound together in one constant, bouncing camera movement.
“The process started by developing a visual universe fit to the music and the themes it arises. I loosely drew a collection of scenes with ink in a book.
“The main creative challenge was to combine all these different elements; I decided to place them onto a map and have them play simultaneously, challenging the audience into picking what to look at.
“My goal was also to have connections between all scenes and recurring elements; in that way, I could build parallel storylines that would unfold throughout the whole video. The use of one camera movement allowed me to bind the different parts together.
“Technically speaking, the film results from a mix of animation on paper and animation on a tablet.
“It was challenging since I needed to animate the scenes in the circles but also place them as I went in the final composition, in order to adjust the timing and the level of information that was perceivable; during the process, I was literally creating the story and the compositing at the same time.”
