Designer Miles Hellyer in Sydney: “This brand film was created to explore the beautiful wooden forms crafted by the team at Giants Orchestra. The focus for this piece was simplicity – slowly revealing the objects to bring attention to the details of the form and texture of the Kauri wood.
“This was a lockdown project of mine that gave me the opportunity to model, animate and compose music!
“Using reference images, the process began by recreating the objects within Blender. A combination of modeling and sculpting was used to handle the organic forms and care was taken in pulling the textures from the reference photos to do justice to the 1000+ year-old wood that was used to create these objects.
“With minimalism in mind, I opted for ultra high contrast lighting. It was important to slowly reveal the objects and create a sense of mystery to match the forest setting of the ancient wood.
“Another factor in the design was usage for Giants Orchestra. The original frames were designed in square format so that I could create different aspect ratios for the final animation. The final frames were rendered with C4D and Redshift.
“I also created the music for this piece. I spent quite a bit of time in lockdown tinkering with approaches to the sound design and landed on something ethereal and minimal that slowly builds as the piece progresses.”
