Paris studio Unit Motion Design conjures a series of dark and dramatic dioramas in this sweeping intro cinematic for the “Into the Light” expansion of Destiny 2, Bungie’s hit free-to-play online first-person shooter.
Lauréline Lorion, head of production at UMD: “Bungie contacted us in the spring of 2023, to accompany them on a new adventure and help them face a new challenge: launching new seasons of their iconic game Destiny and delivering a new vision and a different creative style for the intro cinematics of their new season.
“The challenge lay not in the style chosen for the production, but more in respecting the game’s codes, reproducing strong and emblematic action scenes that would create nostalgia among historical players and inspire new players to enter the Destiny universe.
“This video is the first thing players see when they launch the game, so it’s vital that it makes an impact, getting them excited about this new season, while providing strong markers of the Destiny universe.”
“We decided to maximize the game’s epic, emotional, and powerful qualities by staging scenes of the game’s cinematic universe. This involved reproducing the game’s iconic characters and locations from game assets supplied by Bungie. Modelers had to recreate the various Guardians using different pieces of the assets to offer real diversity and customization close to that offered to players.
“Produced in three months using Cinema 4D, Redshift, and Houdin software, this video is the first thing players see when they launch the game, so it’s vital that it makes an impact, getting them excited about this new season, while providing strong markers of the Destiny universe.”
