Director Shradha Verma and Post Office Studios in Mumbai, India, channel a child’s drawing style to reveal the remarkable journey of an African street dance pioneer as part of Redbull’s “(Un)credited” documentary.
Shradha Verma: “The client wanted us to showcase the story of one of the key characters in the documentary, Seyi Oluyole, the founder of Dream Catchers Academy, a free school for orphaned and underprivileged girls in Lagos, Nigeria.
“Since the story involves school girls, the idea was to execute the treatment as if drawn or imagined by a child and give the film the same childlike simplicity, excitement, and playfulness.
“We worked on style frames and animatics that captured the raw, playful nature of the visual style and movements and we achieved this by incorporating watercolor/crayon brushes & textures, rough edges, and simple shapes in the design.
“In terms of animation, we used a combination of cel and mostly 2D animation to showcase childlike energy and excitement, and also capture a jittery, frame-by-frame effect.”
