Jungler director (and Oscar-winner) Ludovic Houplain channels Las Vegas show choreography to illuminate a Christmas film “that stands out from the usual clichés while retaining a festive spirit” for French luxury perfumer Diptyque.
Ludovic Houplain: “We were approached for this project with an idea that was both surprising and highly exciting – ‘We want to create a musical comedy of little flames.’ It was creatively intriguing to immerse ourselves in such a creative and unexpected brief.
“One of the major challenges of this project was to achieve a visual harmony in CGI without leaning too heavily towards a 3D look. The film delves into complex visual elements such as flames, glass objects, liquid, and gold, all of which needed to be staged in a natural and magical way.
“In terms of storytelling, we start with simplicity and minimalism, gradually moving towards a maximalist climax, creating a captivating contrast.”
“Balancing and rendering all these elements with a consistent level of quality was essential to convey the true sensation of wandering through the backstage of this new advent calendar.
“From an artistic perspective, our inspiration draws from synchronized water dance references and Las Vegas show choreography. We aimed to create a symmetrical and grand visual composition, akin to a spectacular show. In terms of storytelling, we start with simplicity and minimalism, gradually moving towards a maximalist climax, creating a captivating contrast.
Our film unfolds in 45 seconds, with four differents contexts. It showcases the crescendo of a single flame multiplying into a multitude of flames, only to reunite in the end.
