FINCH director Dougal Wilson, with supporting help from Sydney studios Alt.VFX and Make-up Effects Group, land this playful series of three silent films in Australian cinemas to remind audiences to put their phones on, yes… silent.

Micah Walker, Founder/CCO at agency Bear Meets Eagle On Fire: “We wanted to try and stay true to the silent film genre, so we did as much of the effects as possible practically. A lot of time and care was spent building what we could instead of leaning into full CGI for everything.

“Obviously there are elements where that just wasn’t possible. The dancing table, for example, was a combination of a choreographed dancer and visual effects. The Alt.VFX team built the table around the dancer’s performance, always with the idea that it had to move like a table could, if a table could dance. Things like this can get too cartoony too quickly, so that level of realism was always something we all had in mind.

“With the other films as well, we wanted to pay homage to the genre by solving things in a way that felt authentic to how they made films in the silent age. It just meant not doing everything you can do, and sticking to an overall set of principles.”
