“The Monster who came to Tea” is Not a Bedtime Story

Tulips & Chimneys at Passion Pictures and Guy Manwaring at Merman Branded co-direct this hard-hitting spot for UK charity Women’s Aid which works to end domestic abuse against women and children.

Juliette Stern, head of production at Passion Pictures: “We knew this incredibly powerful story had to be told in a sensitive and age-appropriate fashion, given the breadth and potential reach of the campaign. Tulips & Chimneys’ charming, hand-illustrated style seemed like the perfect fit to bring this storybook script to life, making the meaning of the film even more impactful.

“We knew this incredibly powerful story had to be told in a sensitive and age-appropriate fashion, given the breadth and potential reach of the campaign.”

Tulips & Chimneys: “During the storyboarding stage, we really felt like we wanted to try and fully immerse ourselves in the story, so we decided to build a simple set to replicate the space for Lily, her Mum, and the monster.

“Through this we could explore in more depth the mood, lighting and dynamic camera angles, in order to visually accentuate the feelings Lily may go through, especially when she is sitting isolated and vulnerable on the stairs.

“To ensure our monster felt invasive yet intangible, we explored textures and bleeding inks so we could allow his energy to completely take over a physical space.”
