UK director/animator Andy Martin, whose charming character work we feature here, takes the exit into graphically rougher territory with this music video for DIVVY, mixing urgent typography and freestyle dance moves.
Andy Martin: “I created the visuals using a mix of Procreate and After Effects. I hand-animated the dancing figure and the lyrics before combining them with various overlays timed to the music. It was a fun process with the main challenge being making sure the action was busy enough without getting too messy or hectic.
“The dancing figure is my son. He was freestyling some pretty spectacular moves and I managed to grab my phone and document it before he left the zone.”
“I decided to use the child dancing as it reflects the petulant kid in the song. The dancing figure is my son. He was freestyling some pretty spectacular moves and I managed to grab my phone and document it before he left the zone.
“I then took the footage into Procreate as a base for the animation, aiming to be quite rough and lose so it didn’t feel like a straight rotoscoped dance. I also got him and his sister to draw the odd frame which added to the randomness of the movement (they’re 6 and 8).”
