From the release:
Valentin Nouvel, also known as NIU, is a director and animator primarily active in advertising, particularly in the luxury fields (for brands such as Chanel, Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Diptyque), but also in documentary work, collaborating with clients like Arte, France.tv, Vox, and Slash. His work embodies an elegant, contemplative style that uses multiple animation techniques, from motion design to collage.
Valentin frequently collaborates with Chanel on projects for holiday campaigns, or special events, such as Lunar New Year. These numerous collaborations have allowed him to deepen his expertise in the luxury field. He also creates digital greeting cards for various occasions, giving him the opportunity to experiment with faster and lighter productions.
Valentin’s creative approach inspired him in his later work for EviDenS de Beauté (directed by Les Poupées Russes), where he was in charge of both the artistic direction and the animation. In this Christmas campaign, Valentin uses 3D techniques for the first time, in order to embody the magical journey of a koi fish from Tokyo to Paris.
In addition to his work in cosmetics and perfumery, such as Baum (Forest – directed by Parallel Studio), Valentin also works in the documentary field, covering diverse topics like art and culture, the web, and science. He creates visuals for opening title sequences (such as the Arte Book Club) and produces animated capsules for documentaries. An example is the episode Quiet Storm (Earworm) for Vox Media, where the main challenge was to tell a story with limited archive footage. Valentin manages to bring the footage to life through motion design and typography animation.
His project Instants originated from a series of photos taken in China during a five-month road trip through Southeast Asia. The project captures moments of life, atmospheres, sounds, and scents, conveying his travel memories. Through this personal project, he developed his mixed-media technique with paper collage.
