Join the design and motion team at Swedish CG studio Brickland for creative and technical insights into the making of Silhouettes, a striking new in-house film “reflecting on the duality of the Self and sprung from our love of fashion.”

From Brickland: “Clarity is comfortable and brings a sense of control. Ambiguity, on the other hand, is marked by anxiety and threatens to tell us stories of our own shadow. This flm became a playground for us to explore visual expressions between a clear state of mind and the chaotic internal self of our virtual muse Silo.



“Silo’s silhouette symbolizes the boundary between the persona and the shadow, a border created by the norms of society. Silo shields his inner self from the judgmental eyes of the world, but as for us all, if the internal forces are suffocated they will find their way to the surface.

“The creative challenges of the project included creating a believable virtual human with an authentic fashion style, designing every detail and aspect of the film while staying true to the initial idea, exploring the chaos and duality of the mind through visual effects, and finding motion, flow and rhythm between the two mental worlds.

“The Silo character was made using Human generator in Blender and custom sculpting. Hair made in Blender. Skull made in ZBrush. Jacket, trousers and mesh top made and simulated in CLO 3D. Mesh top curve structure made in Houdini. Shoes made in ZBrush and Houdini.

“Textures were made with Substance Painter. Early look development made in Cycles Blender. Final Rendering done in Cinema 4D using Redshift. VFX created in Houdini, where we used everything from Pyro, flip to custom simulations. Keyframed animations made using Blender and Auto-Rig Pro with shape keys. After Effects used for comp and grade with Resolve for editing.”
